Five companies have submitted bids for a new waste collection contract in Yaiza, with the proposals now due to undergo technical and financial evaluation.

The deadline for submitting bids ended on Monday, August 10. The council is proposing a 10-year contract worth approximately 36 million euros.

Mayor Óscar Noda said the aim of the new tender was to improve waste collection across the municipality.

“The goal of launching this new tender has been to improve waste collection in all our towns, expanding and optimising the service with much more efficient measures tailored to the growth of both the resident and tourist populations.”

The contract specifications cover the collection of organic waste, general waste, household oil, bulky items, electrical appliances and yard trimmings.

A new feature will also be the installation of mobile recycling stations, which will rotate through the towns of Yaiza.

The successful company will also be responsible for collecting construction and demolition waste abandoned in public spaces and forming piles of debris.

The service will additionally cover waste generated at festivals, pilgrimages and any event organised by the Yaiza Ayuntamiento.

The council will now follow the established legal procedure by reviewing the documentation submitted by each company and carrying out a technical assessment of the proposals and their financial offers.

The process will then move to the award and signing of the contract, followed by the launch of the new waste collection service.

Yaiza has emerged as the most expensive destination in the Canary Islands for summer accommodation, according to a new study by holiday rental platform Holidu.

The report, which analysed accommodation searches by Spanish travellers for stays between July 4 and August 30, 2026, found that Yaiza commands a median nightly rate of €260, making it the costliest municipality among the 25 most searched destinations in the archipelago.

Lanzarote features prominently throughout the rankings, with four municipalities appearing among the islands’ most sought-after holiday destinations. Teguise ranks 11th in popularity, followed by Tías in 12th, Yaiza in 14th and Arrecife in 18th.

While Yaiza is only the 14th most searched destination, it tops the price table by a considerable margin. Tías is the second most expensive municipality in the ranking, with a median nightly rate of €172, while Teguise places fifth at €154 per night.

Between the two Lanzarote municipalities are Adeje in Tenerife, with an average nightly price of €166, and Agaete in Gran Canaria at €156.

Accommodation in Arrecife is considerably more affordable, with a median nightly rate of €118, placing the island’s capital 17th in terms of price.

At the other end of the scale, the Canary Islands’ most affordable destinations this summer are Icod de los Vinos in Tenerife at €95 per night, followed by Los Llanos de Aridane on La Palma and Puerto del Rosario on Fuerteventura, both with median rates of €101.

The popularity ranking itself is led by the two provincial capitals. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife are the most searched destinations among Spanish travellers, each with an average nightly accommodation price of €108.

Holidu’s summer price index is based on searches made through holidu.es, with pricing calculated using the median cost per accommodation per night. The data was collected on July 13, 2026, for bookings with check-in dates between July 4 and August 30, 2026.

Yaiza has paid tribute to Vicenta Bravo Marrero, who is approaching her 87th birthday, recognising the Femés native for a lifetime of hard work, resilience, and dedication to her family and community.

Born in 1939, Vicenta has become a respected figure in both Yaiza and across Lanzarote. A former salt worker and celebrated cook, she is admired not only for raising 13 children while overcoming significant personal hardships, including being widowed at the age of 52, but also for embodying perseverance and determination throughout her life.

Her remarkable contribution was recently acknowledged by the Lanzarote Cabildo, which awarded her the prestigious Jameo de Oro in the Heritage category. The nomination was put forward by Yaiza Mayor Óscar Noda.

Following the official 2026 Honours and Distinctions ceremony, held on 25 June at the Jameos del Agua auditorium, Noda visited Vicenta at her home to personally present her with a gift as a gesture of gratitude and admiration. He was joined by councillors Águeda Cedrés, Freya Finch, Ángel Lago and César Rijo.

Reflecting on the visit, Noda praised Vicenta’s character and achievements.

“Listening to Vicenta, words fail me when it comes to describing her humanity, her work ethic and her resilience. Those of us who grew up in the town have witnessed her dedication since we were children, so her life story is truly fascinating and inspiring,” he said, while also thanking her for her warm hospitality.

The mayor also spent time with Vicenta during the San Marcial festivities, the annual celebration that is the highlight of the calendar in Femés.

Vicenta’s life has been closely tied to the salt industry that once played a vital role along Lanzarote’s southern coast. As a young girl, she accompanied her mother and a donkey to the salt pans, helping prepare them each spring before the harvested salt was sold. Raised by her mother and grandmother, she developed extensive knowledge of this traditional trade from an early age.

Alongside her work in the salt pans, Vicenta became well known as the driving force behind the former Casa Emiliano restaurant in Femés, where her goat and rabbit dishes earned a loyal following.

Her dedication to preserving Lanzarote’s traditions has been recognised on several occasions. In addition to receiving this year’s Jameo de Oro, she was honoured in 2025 during commemorations marking the 50th anniversary of Timanfaya National Park, reflecting the lasting impact she has made on the island’s cultural heritage.

Yaiza Mayor Óscar Noda has demanded an immediate meeting with the Coastal Department to explain the reasons behind works to remove the stairway giving access to the beach at El Golfo.

Noda claims the council has been given no notice or information of the works, and has also criticised the Cabildo, for not responding to earlier requests to repair the stairway.

Noda stated that the Ayuntamiento understands that the works are part of a project to reclaim public land on the coast, adding “We want to know what actions are being carried out and what their scope is, what project is planned and what alternatives exist.”

The village of Femés is preparing to celebrate its annual San Marcial del Rubicón Festival, honouring both the patron saint of the town and of Lanzarote, with a week-long programme of cultural, sporting and community events.

The official opening takes place on Sunday, 28 June, at 7:00pm in the Church of San Marcial, where resident Julián Cáceres Hernández will deliver the traditional opening speech.

Well known in the village for his popular chickpea and goat stews and his longstanding involvement in local celebrations, Cáceres is expected to reflect on the history, traditions and shared memories that have shaped the San Marcial festivities over the years.

Following the speech, the group Arife will perform in the village square at 8:00pm. The band is recognised for blending Amazigh (Berber) influences with Canarian and North African musical traditions, using instruments including the timple, chácaras, bucio, guembri and kora.

The programme continues throughout the following week with cooking competitions, workshops, tastings, comedy performances and live music for all ages.

Among the highlights are the return of the Transajaches sporting event on Saturday, 4 July, after a seven-year absence, a concert by Pepe Benavente on 2 July, Youth Night on 3 July featuring Mambo Latino, Javi Fajardo and Vocal Force, and the popular Fiesta de la Pamela on 4 July, with performances by Bourbon, Defecto Venturi, a tribute to Fito y Fitipaldis and Pandora.

The main religious celebrations will take place on Tuesday, 7 July, with a solemn mass and procession accompanied by the Municipal Band, followed by a performance from the Timbayba Folk Group.

The day will conclude with the 18th Soloists’ Gathering at 9:00pm, featuring the show Herederos with performances by Iván Quintana, Ciro Corujo, José Manuel Ramos and Almudena.
