Emergency services rescued a woman who had fallen and broken her ankle at Las Grietas, near Tías, yesterday.

The call was received at 12.45 pm, and firefighters, paramedics and local police arrived at the area, located just off the LZ-35 road.

There, the woman’s leg was splinted, and she was transported to an ambulance on a stretcher. 

It is the latest of several callouts to rescue tourists after falls and leg injuries in zones such as Las Grietas, Caldera Blanca and Montaña Roja.

Tías is celebrating after the Canarian Supreme Court upheld its complaint against proposed fish farming off the coast of Puerto del carmen. The judgement has paralysed plans for an extensive fish farming zone that would also have extended into waters off the coasts of San Bartolomé and Arrecife. 

The decision will force a review of the plan to create an “Aquaculture Interest Zone” that was approved by the Canarian Government in 2018. The proposed zone measures 9 kilometres in length and would lie two kilometres off the southern coast of Lanzarote, directly offshore from the beaches of Los Pocillos, Matagorda, Guasimeta, Playa Honda, La Concha and El Cable.

The Mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz, said “this ruling represents a clear endorsement of the position that the City Council has defended from the beginning in defence of our coastline, our natural resources, and the general interest of the municipality’s residents”.

Tías Ayuntamiento has announced the upcoming installation of solar-powered passenger information boards at several bus stops across the municipality, aimed at improving the experience for public transport users.

The project has been awarded to the company Capmar Sistemas de Información and forms part of the wider initiative titled “Supply and Installation of a Passenger Information System for Lanzarote’s Regular Intercity Transport (ITS).” The scheme is included in Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and is financed through European Union Next Generation funds.

The new information points will be installed at bus stops located along the LZ-2 in Mácher, Avenida Alcalde Florencio Suárez in Tías, and several key streets in Puerto del Carmen, including Rambla Islas Canarias, Avenida de las Playas, calle Venus, calle Marte, calle Noruega, calle Juan Carlos I and calle Reina Sofía.

Mayor José Juan Cruz said the initiative will improve services for passengers by providing accessible, real-time transport information through a modern and environmentally sustainable solar-powered system.

Councillor for Mobility and Transport Sergio García added that the new boards will represent “a significant improvement for residents and visitors,” particularly in busy intercity transport areas such as Mácher, Puerto del Carmen and Tías.

Tías Ayuntamiento celebrates the inclusion of its three Early Childhood and Elementary Education Centers (CEIP) in the Canarian Government’s Eco-Cafeteria program, making it the first municipality to offer this service in all its schools. 

In total, the program serves approximately 440 people, including students and teachers, thereby reinforcing a firm commitment to healthy, locally sourced food in school cafeterias, as the service is provided by two companies specialising in organic and locally grown products.

Participation in this program has significantly improved the quality of food for children using school cafeterias, incorporating fresh, seasonal, and more nutritious products, most of which come from the island itself.

Prosecutors have called for a ten-year prison sentence for a Tías man who forged 131 banknotes.

The man, in his early 70s, is accused of using an HP Deskjet 1510 printer to forge almost €9,000 of €50 and €100 notes between 2011 and 2020.

The prosecutors have also called for a fine of €88,500 in the trail, which will take place on Monday May 4^th in Arrecife’s Courts.

Tías Ayuntamiento has announced the closure of one of the main access roads linking the town to the main LZ-2 road from Monday, 12^th January.

The road between the roundabout near Ferretería Tías and the main LZ-2 road will be closed in both directions, as will the slip-road that allows traffic from the south to access it from the LZ-2.

Traffic wishing to access Tías or exit the town to Arrecife will have to detour via Calle Libertad, further up the hill just above Los Villareales (or the “Smurf Houses”).

The closure will allow work to be carried out on the road, and works may last for up to three months.

Tías is set to celebrate its patron saints, Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria and San Blas, with a vibrant festival programme featuring more than 50 events from 23rd January to 3rd February 2026.

This year’s festivities will mark the 230th anniversary of the Iglesia de La Candelaria.

The celebrations will officially commence on Friday, 23rd January with an opening speech by Emilio Fernández Batista. The inaugural event will also feature performances by Domingo Rodríguez “El Colorao” and Fabiola Socas, setting the tone for a fortnight of events that expertly blends deep-rooted tradition with contemporary entertainment for all ages.

The packed schedule promises something for everyone, encompassing folk gatherings, concerts, children’s activities, sports tournaments, parades, theatre, dance, and more. Notable highlights include the 17th Tenderete Canario Candelaria, the Noche de Parrandas, a popular race, a traditional fried food event, a concert by the Navarran group Puro Relajo, and the 22nd Encuentro de Timples la Candelaria y San Blas.

Tías Ayuntamiento has announced its official programme of events to mark the end of 2025 and the arrival of 2026, culminating in the much-anticipated visit of The Three Kings.

A series of traditional and musical events will be hosted across Tías and Puerto del Carmen, designed to bring together residents and visitors of all ages.

The celebrations begin on 31 December, with the main New Year’s Eve party at Plaza del Varadero in Puerto del Carmen. Starting at 11:30pm, the event will feature music from DJ Ángel Pérez and the popular quartet Los Conejeros, providing the soundtrack for the countdown to midnight. The new year will be welcomed with a spectacular fireworks display launched from Avenida de las Playas.

The festive period reaches its peak on Monday, 5 January, with the arrival of the Three Kings. Their Majesties will first appear at the La Tiñosa pier at 11:30am. They will then collect children’s letters at the Plaza del Varadero before commencing their parade through Puerto del Carmen along Calle Teide to Calle Los Afrechos.

Later, at 6:00pm, the final reception and parade will take place in Tías. The procession will start at the roundabout where Calle Pérez Galdós meets Avenida Central Alcalde Florencio Suárez, proceeding along the avenue and Calle Libertad. A dedicated letter collection point for Their Majesties will be set up at the Francisco Bermúdez Hernández “Pancho” football field.

The second edition of ‘Lanzarote, Arte y Guateque’ has launched to remarkable success, drawing large crowds and achieving significant sales from its very first night.

The opening event, held last Friday at the Ermita de Tías, saw more than 30 works sold, underscoring a growing public appetite for contemporary art created on the island and a strong commitment to supporting local talent.

Coordinated by the Ars Magna Cultural and Artistic Association with the support of Tías Ayuntamiento’s Department of Culture, led by Councillor Pepa González, the exhibition brings together over thirty artists working across disciplines including painting, sculpture, photography, collage, engraving, and ceramics.

The impressive opening sales reinforce the project’s core mission: to make art more accessible and to encourage the public to purchase original works directly from local artists at affordable prices.

Tías Ayuntamiento has commenced initial safety works at Las Grietas, following the recommendations of a specialised geological study.

Councillors Mariana Pérez Noriega (Heritage) and Carmen Gloria Rodríguez (Environment) visited the site to oversee the start of the works. They explained the objective is to safeguard public safety and protect an area of high geological value that has faced increasing pressure from unregulated visits. The signage and cordoning work is expected to finish within the coming days.

A technical study by geologist M. Leticia Pacheco Cabrera identifies Las Grietas as a Site of Geological Interest. The report warns the area is highly susceptible to rockfalls due to the fragile composition of its walls, primarily loose lapilli and ash, combined with erosion and human activity.

It concludes the slopes are unstable, presenting a high rockfall risk and necessitating immediate preventive measures.

This first phase of the works involves cordoning off the most sensitive zones, restricting access to hazardous areas, and installing informational signage. Tias Ayuntamiento emphasises this is a preliminary step towards a comprehensive management plan for public use.

Mayor José Juan Cruz Saavedra clarified that the actions “are not intended to permanently close the enclave, but rather to protect and manage it in a manner compatible with the conservation of natural heritage and public safety.” Future phases will explore implementing controlled and guided visits, as suggested by the technical report.

The Heritage and Environment departments continue working to protect the island’s geological heritage and prevent risks, urging public cooperation and respect for the new signage.
