San Bartolomé Ayuntamiento has confirmed it will restore the LGBTIQ+ mural dedicated to the transgender community after it was vandalised with paint last week. Mayor Isidro Pérez confirmed the decision to La Voz, while also announcing plans for a second mural celebrating the LGBTIQ+ community.

Artist Iván Temprano, who created the damaged mural, said the artwork’s location near the sports centre leaves it particularly vulnerable to vandalism, as the area is often deserted. He suggested this increases the risk of further attacks once the mural has been restored.

In response, the council plans to commission a new LGBTIQ+ mural near the town’s secondary school. Although no official date has been set, authorities say the project will begin “soon.”

Speaking about the attack, Temprano recalled receiving negative remarks even while he was painting the mural. He stressed that the artwork contained nothing provocative, describing it as a simple depiction of people smiling and embracing.

In comments shared on social media, the artist said the vandalism appeared to be ideologically motivated by individuals who view messages of diversity and inclusion as a threat.

“The mural simply said that love conquers hate and showed people smiling and hugging one another,” he said. “I don’t understand how a message like that could provoke such a reaction. It’s difficult to believe there are still people who think this way, but clearly there are.”

Temprano also highlighted the damage done to the artwork itself but said the incident would not change his commitment to creating inclusive public art.

“I’ll continue using my art to support causes and messages centred on inclusion and respect,” he said. “Sometimes, when people try to silence a message, they end up amplifying it instead.”

The artist also addressed criticism on social media regarding the cost of the mural, clarifying that the project was funded by the Canarian Government rather than San Bartolomé council.

The post San Bartolomé to Restore Vandalised LGBTIQ+ Mural and Commission a New Artwork first appeared on Gazette Life.

The Canarian High Court of Justice has upheld almost all of the prison sentences imposed on the gang responsible for a violent home invasion in San Bartolomé in January 2016. The group, made up of eight people including the attackers and their accomplices, posed as police officers before carrying out a prolonged assault, torture, and robbery.

In a judgment written by Judge Antonio Doreste, appeals lodged by three of the convicted defendants were dismissed and they were handed sentences ranging from 5 to 18 years in prison. The convictions include attempted murder, robbery with unlawful detention, possession of prohibited weapons, and membership of a criminal organisation.

The court described the attack as exceptionally serious, noting that the main victim was tortured for around two hours. During the ordeal, he suffered repeated beatings, multiple fractures, electric shocks to his genitals, and other acts of extreme cruelty.

According to the ruling, the crime was carefully planned rather than spontaneous. The gang carried out surveillance beforehand, assigned specific roles to participants, rented vehicles, used disguises to impersonate law enforcement officers, and brought equipment to restrain their victims. The judges concluded that the group had an organised structure on the island and worked together to prepare and execute criminal activities over time.

The High Court also rejected arguments that the attempted murder conviction should be reduced to a lesser offence. It ruled that the level of violence used demonstrated eventual intent to kill, while also finding sufficient evidence to support the conviction for operating as a criminal organisation, citing its stability, division of responsibilities, and ongoing criminal purpose.

One Partial Appeal Allowed

The court partially accepted the appeal of one defendant after finding that the charge of membership of a criminal organisation had been withdrawn during the trial. As a result, that conviction and the associated sentence were overturned for that individual alone, while all of the remaining convictions were upheld.

The court reaffirmed the Provincial Court’s findings of fact, which state that at around 8:30 a.m. on 18 January 2016, four members of the gang entered the victim’s home while pretending to be officers carrying out a search linked to an alleged money laundering investigation.

The attackers tied up the homeowner and his partner before subjecting the homeowner to severe torture, including electric shocks to his genitals, in order to force him to open a safe. They stole three watches, jewellery, and other valuables before fleeing the scene.

The victim’s injuries were so severe that he died two months later.

In its judgment, the TSJC remarked that the prison sentences imposed were “lenient” given the seriousness of the offences. The court highlighted that one defendant, convicted as an accomplice, had 11 previous convictions, including one for murder. It also noted that the alleged ringleader had seven previous convictions, one of which related to the same murder case.

The post Prison Sentences for Lanzarote Gang That Posed as Police During Brutal Home Raid first appeared on Gazette Life.

This was the scenario for Garceta 2026, one of the regular emergency simulations that take place on the island to test the capacity of emergency services to handle a potential disaster.

After the Control Tower received the emergency call, the Rescue and Firefighting Service (SSEI) was immediately notified and the incident was reported to the Operations Centre, activating the airport’s Emergency Plan.

A Crisis Committee was formed and a Main Command Post (PMP) and an Advanced Command Post (PMA) were set up, while outside services were notified of the incident.

Triage was carried out on victims of the crash, with some immediately transferred to hospital, while the less seriously injured are treated in special rooms. Facilities for family members and the press were also set up.

More than 130 people took part in the drill, with representatives from all major security services such as Local and National police, Guardia Civil, firefighters, Civil Protection, the Canarian Emergency Service, the Red Cross and others.

Volunteers from local schools also took part, many playing the part of accident victims.

The post Emergency plane crash drill in San Bartolomé first appeared on Gazette Life.

Fernando Vadillo, San Bartolomé’s Councillor for Animal Welfare, said that “this website is born with the aim of making the work carried out from the Animal Protection Centre more accessible and transparent, valuing the joint work between municipal management, the professional team and volunteers”.

“The role of volunteers is fundamental”, he added “As they contribute to the emotional welfare of the animals through walks and socialization, thus increasing their chances of adoption”.

Among the services highlighted on the site is a fostering initiative, which provides temporary care for animals that may be vulnerable, such as puppies, pregnant animals or those recovering from surgery.

San Bartolomé Ayuntamiento has issued fines to sixteen individuals following a targeted crackdown on illegal waste dumping across the municipality.

Over recent months, local authorities have intensified surveillance operations, resulting in the detection of numerous offences involving the abandonment of household items, general waste, and construction rubble in public spaces and unauthorised locations.

The mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez, emphasised the importance of shared civic duty in maintaining the municipality. “Keeping our municipality clean is our priority but it is also a collective responsibility,” he said. “San Bartolomé is a place that we neighbours take care of every day, and we cannot allow uncivil behaviour to damage our public spaces or our landscape. Cleanliness and respect for the municipality are non-negotiable.”

So far this year, a total of sixteen people have been penalised, with fines ranging from €54 to €1,200 depending on the severity of the infringement. The majority of cases involved the improper disposal of household goods and waste, though authorities also uncovered instances where piles of construction rubble had been left on public roads.

Several of those fined do not reside in San Bartolomé, underlining the ongoing necessity for rigorous monitoring to deter such conduct.

Mayor Pérez also expressed gratitude towards the municipal teams responsible for upholding environmental standards. “I am grateful for the work of the Environment and Public Services staff, as well as the work carried out by the Local Police and its officers, whose monitoring tasks have been key to detecting these infringements and processing the corresponding penalty proceedings,” he added.

To assist residents in disposing of waste responsibly, San Bartolomé Ayuntamiento operates a free door-to-door collection service for household items. Residents can arrange a collection by calling the toll-free number 928 819 473.

For other types of waste, such as rubble and construction materials, the public is reminded to make use of the recycling centres located across Lanzarote.

The post San Bartolomé fines sixteen people for illegal waste dumping first appeared on Gazette Life.
