Students at the secondary school in Puerto del Carmen are being given crucial advice on road safety relating to the growing use of electric scooters.

The Tías Local Police have launched a series of informational talks aimed at young riders, using real world examples, images and video footage to drive the message home. The objective is to encourage the safe and responsible use of scooters among schoolchildren.

During the sessions, officers explain the basic traffic rules that apply to electric scooters, including the legal requirement to wear a safety vest and helmet. They also outline the technical features that scooters must legally possess, and demonstrate the correct way to ride on the road. A video showing real life violations is played, after which officers take questions from students.

According to the police, most students lack formal training in this area, making preventive education all the more important. Without it, they risk facing significant penalties. For example, riding without a helmet carries a fine of €200, while other infractions can lead to fines of up to €1,500. Young riders are also reminded that they are not permitted to ride on pavements or wear headphones while using an electric scooter.

This is the second consecutive year that these educational sessions have been delivered in secondary schools across the southern municipality. Students at the Tías secondary school, together with those at Los Lirios, received the same training at the end of last January.

Firefighters were called to a fire in an apartment on C/Salinas in Puerto del Carmen last night.

The fire was reported at 1.34 am, and on arrival firefighters from Arrecife discovered that the fire had spread throughout the apartment. The fire was eventually extinguished with the assistance of a unit from the Parque Sur fire station in Uga. Once safe, the tenant was allowed in to the building to collect some belongings.

An electric scooter was discovered in the apartment and, although this is not thought to be the source of the fire, it was taken to the Arrecife station to be submerged in water. Firefighters consider that the blaze may have been caused by candles which were discovered in the apartment.

Tías Ayuntamiento has approved a measure to fast-track the final approval of its Plan for Modernisation, Improvement, and Increased Competitiveness in Puerto del Carmen (PMM).

The Ayuntamiento has set out a framework that will see 30% of three private residential developments allocated to public housing.

Mayor José Juan Cruz Saavedra explained that the PMM encompasses 43 private projects and 13 public initiatives. Among the private schemes, three are designated for residential use, and their viability is contingent on the requirement that 30% of the developed area be set aside for public housing.

“This makes the municipality one of the pioneers in the Canary Islands in setting aside land for the creation of public housing,” said Cruz Saavedra.

Tias councillor for Urban Planning, Ulpiano Calero, highlighted that the PMM includes 36 initiatives, covering the renovation of outdated tourist and commercial establishments as well as improvements to complementary infrastructure.

According to the Plan, the proposed renovation initiatives serve to enhance the value of the tourist destination and improve residents’ quality of life, while also delivering a direct economic impact on the island’s wider economy, particularly within the municipality.

In addition to the housing provisions, the Plan provides for the creation of a new general and island-wide system on the site of the former Daos school. This facility will house the Island Strategy for Accessibility and Inclusion, which focuses on social services, education, employment, universal accessibility, tourism, sports, and citizen participation.

Guardía Civil agents have arrested two people charged with four counts of theft and bank fraud in which €2,000 worth of property were stolen and €8,000 worth of goods purchased with stolen credit cards.

The investigation began in February this year, when agents were made aware that thieves were using a classic pickpocket’s method of working in pairs, targeting older tourists and stealing wallets and handbags while using distraction techniques.

The thefts in question took place in crowded areas in Puerto del Carmen, and agents discovered that the thieves had swapped hire cars and rental accommodation to throw investigators off the track. Nevertheless, the arrests of two Romanian nationals were confirmed yesterday

The investigation continues and further arrests have not been ruled out.

Emergency services were called to remove a hire car from Playa de los Pocillos late on Monday night in Puerto del Carmen after two tourists decided it would be good idea to drive it on the beach.

The car soon got stuck in wet sand close to the shore, and emergency services were called.

With the tide rising, the firefighters acted quickly, using wedges and other equipment to free the vehicle and move it to a safe place.

As driving on the beach is strictly forbidden, the tourists have already been fined by the Guardia Civil and are also likely to have an interesting meeting with the hire company.
