A 40-year-old man was saved after falling into the sea in Playa Blanca yesterday.

Emergency services were called to the coast near the Pechiguera lighthouse at 11 am and a brief search was launched involving a helicopter.

However, the man was located and managed to get out of the water on his own. He was treated for signs of hypothermia and multiple bruising and taken to the Playa Blanca health centre.

Yaiza Ayuntamiento has temporarily closed the small beach at Playa Blanca after a sewage discharge was reported on Tuesday morning.

The council has asked residents and visitors to respect the red flag and use other beaches in the south of Lanzarote while water quality tests are carried out.

The temporary closure will remain in place until the results of laboratory tests by Public Health indicate that the water is safe for swimming.

Yaiza Ayuntamiento has notified the Lanzarote Water Consortium of the malfunction detected at the pumping station near the beach.

The council said it will provide an update when Playa Blanca beach reopens to the public.

A five-year-old boy who was airlifted to Gran Canaria after drowning in a hotel pool in Playa Blanca has died, according to Radio Televisión Canaria.

The incident happened at around 1.45pm on Thursday, September 3, when the child was pulled from the swimming pool at the hotel complex.

The facility’s lifeguard, a doctor and others at the scene began performing CPR.

When medical personnel arrived, they continued with advanced resuscitation efforts, which succeeded in restoring the boy’s pulse.

He was then airlifted in critical condition by medical helicopter to the Gran Canaria Maternity and Children’s Hospital.

The boy remained in hospital but could not recover from his critical condition and passed away.

A new 2,500-square-metre recreational area for beach sports is being built at the San Marcial del Rubicón sports centre in Playa Blanca.

The new accessible facility will include soft-surface courts for beach volleyball, beach football and beach handball, alongside locker rooms, an exercise area, shaded spaces, a kiosk, terrace, perimeter fencing and lighting.

The municipal project has a budget of 1.3 million euros and is being co-financed by Yaiza Ayuntamiento and the Lanzarote Cabildo.

Ángel Lago, Yaiza’s Councilor for Sports and Public Works, said the project also includes lighting for both the new beach sports area and the first phase of the sports centre, which has already been completed.

“The construction plan calls for lighting the new area designated for beach sports, as well as lighting the first phase, which has already been completed. In Yaiza, we are promoting the construction and development of spaces for sports and family gatherings, which also enhance the beauty of their surroundings.”

The works form part of wider plans for sports facilities in Playa Blanca.

Yaiza is also putting out to bid improvement and new construction work for the Playa Blanca football field, with an estimated budget of 2.2 million euros.

The project includes new bleachers, locker rooms, a cafeteria, support facilities and lighting.

Yaiza Ayuntamiento has reopened Avenida de Femés in Playa Blanca following a €1.3 million upgrade aimed at improving road safety and access to the resort.

The road reopened in both directions on Wednesday afternoon.

The works included reinforcing the roadbed, widening the roadway, resurfacing, and constructing a central median and cycle lane. The project was funded from the Yaiza municipal budget.

The mayor said the contractor must now move immediately to the second phase of the project.

“The contractor must immediately proceed with the second phase of the project, which involves installing streetlights on the newly built median and opening the bike lane that we can already see on one side of this road. All these measures are included in this same budget.”

Further works are continuing on Avenida de Femés, while the same contractor, Hermanos Tavío Santana, is also carrying out the comprehensive renovation of Avenida Papagayo, the main thoroughfare through Playa Blanca.

Yaiza Ayuntamiento is investing a further 2.6 million euros in the Avenida Papagayo project.

Noda and Lago visited the section covered by the second phase of the project on Wednesday, where they inspected the replacement of pavements and the removal of barriers.

“We have asked the company to work quickly to finish the sidewalk edges and continue paving all the way to the Ciudad Jardín roundabout. Regarding the first phase, which has already been completed, we can say that residents and businesses are satisfied with the addition of 65 new free parking spaces,” said Óscar Noda.

The mayor also apologised for any inconvenience caused by the various projects currently being carried out in Playa Blanca.

A woman was rescued and taken to hospital after falling at Playa de las Coloradas, in Playa Blanca, on Monday evening.

The incident happened at around 6.30pm on Monday, August 31^st.

Following a report to the emergency services, local police officers, an ambulance from and firefighters attended the scene.

Medical personnel treated the woman, who was experiencing severe pain in her right knee, and stabilised her while awaiting the arrival of the firefighters.

Working alongside the medical team, firefighters applied a splint before transferring the injured woman to the ambulance.

The woman was subsequently taken by ambulance to the Dr Molina Orosa Hospital in Arrecife.

Yaiza Mayor Óscar Noda has called on the Cabildo, the Canarian Government and the Canarian Housing Institute to tackle the delays that are stalling two important housing projects in Playa Blanca.

The first project relates to the construction of 136 homes in the Montaña Roja area, which has not started yet. Noda claims that plans are complete, the investment is around €34 million, and there are already 400 people in the municipality registered as applicants for subsidized rental housing: “What’s missing is for the Canary Islands Government to put the project out to tender and carry it out. We can’t continue turning a social emergency into a permanent promise,” Noda said.

The second project is the allocation of 42 homes which have already been completed in the Los Ajaches complex. These were transferred to the Canarian Housing institute earlier this year on the understanding that keys would be delivered before summer. However, this has not yet occurred.

Noda commented “It is unacceptable that there are finished, empty public housing units while hundreds of people wait. Bureaucracy cannot continue to keep the doors closed to 42 families.”

Maintenance teams have continued cleanup work in Playa Blanca, clearing weeds from roadsides and public areas as part of ongoing improvements across the resort.

Yaiza Ayuntamiento continued its cleanup and landscaping work in Playa Blanca last week, removing weeds along the road between Avenida A Femes and Avenida de Papagayo.

At the same time, a separate crew cleared weeds from around the Rubicón Shopping Centre in Marina Rubicón.

Yaiza Mayor Oscar Noda said: “We are making progress in various parts of the town to care for our public spaces and improve their appearance for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike.”

The work forms part of the council’s ongoing maintenance programme to improve the appearance of public spaces across Playa Blanca.

A man has been arrested in Lanzarote after allegedly carrying out a series of thefts at hotels in Playa Blanca before attempting to evade detection by travelling on public buses.

The arrest was made on 4 August following an investigation by officers from the Yaiza police station into a surge in thefts reported across the municipality. The investigation began after four thefts were reported within a 24-hour period during the second week of July.

The breakthrough came when one of the victims used the geolocation function on a stolen mobile phone, which indicated that the device was located at a bus stop in Playa Blanca. Officers responded to the location, where they identified several individuals, including the suspect.

During a search, officers recovered the stolen phone from the man’s backpack. They also found additional items that matched property reported stolen in other incidents earlier that day.

The discovery led investigators to expand their enquiries. CCTV footage from the affected areas allegedly placed the suspect at the locations where the thefts occurred, carrying the same backpack later seized by officers.

According to the investigation, the suspect is believed to have targeted hotel rooms in several resort complexes, entering while guests were away after first checking that the rooms were unoccupied.

Investigators also concluded that he regularly used public transport to travel between locations, a method they believe was intended to make it more difficult for police to track his movements and identify him.

The man has since appeared before the relevant judicial authority along with the evidence gathered during the investigation.

The Guardia Civil said the operation forms part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen security in Lanzarote’s tourism sector, helping to ensure that visitors can enjoy the island safely while protecting both their personal belongings and their peace of mind.
