The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, and the Mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, met this Thursday at the Casa del Camello in Uga to review progress on a series of strategic projects for the municipality and to strengthen coordination between government bodies in response to the challenges created by rapid population growth in the south of Lanzarote.

During the working meeting, Clavijo placed Yaiza’s situation within the broader context of the Canarian Government’s commitment to making the demographic challenge and territorial cohesion central pillars of public policy.

The president argued for the continued promotion of “useful policies” and stressed that growth does not happen uniformly across all islands or municipalities. As a result, public responses must be tailored to each area.

For his part, Mayor Óscar Noda highlighted several commitments made by the Canarian Government, including “the tender for the expansion of the Playa Blanca wastewater treatment plant before the end of the year with a multi-year investment of 11 million euros and the modernisation of the current plant”. He also thanked the president “for his willingness not only to listen, but to take concrete actions to solve problems in the areas of health, education, housing and roads”.

PLAYA BLANCA PORT

Following the meeting, the president and the mayor visited the Playa Blanca port, which handles more than 1.1 million passengers a year. There they observed the progress of initiatives launched by Puertos Canarios. Completed improvements include the reorganisation of access routes, lane and car park signage, the opening of the promenade behind the breakwater, and the renovation of the terminal and its surroundings.

These measures are intended to prepare the port for the arrival of its first cruise ship in November, as well as catering to boutique cruise ships, yachts and luxury megayachts.

PLAYA BLANCA HEALTH CENTRE

The visit continued at the Playa Blanca Health Centre, where the Canary Islands Health Service plans to carry out expansion work once the Yaiza Ayuntamiento has finalised the paperwork for the free transfer of the property adjacent to the building. The aim is to adapt the range of services to meet the increased demand for care from both residents and visitors.

The president reiterated the regional government’s commitment to strengthening the public healthcare network in municipalities experiencing greater demographic and healthcare pressure and emphasised that this initiative will improve the centre’s capacity to respond and bring it into line with the municipality’s growth.

Currently, the health centre serves a registered population of 16,834 individual health card holders and maintains a high level of patient care throughout the year, underscoring the need to continue expanding and improving its facilities. This initiative is part of the Canarian Government’s plan to adapt primary care to the realities of growing municipalities such as Yaiza.

SCHOOLS

The visit concluded at the CEO Montaña Roja and the CEIP Playa Blanca, two schools that reflect the municipality’s population growth and the need to continue strengthening educational infrastructure in Playa Blanca.

For CEO Montaña Roja, the Canarian Government is planning an expansion valued at more than 4.5 million euros, to create new spaces, specialised classrooms and split classrooms, as well as to improve essential services such as the cafeteria, the kitchen and outdoor areas.

At CEIP Playa Blanca, work continues to adapt the school to meet growing educational demand. Among these efforts, the annexation of the municipal preschool stands out; this will allow the school itself to manage the entire first cycle of early childhood education, thereby strengthening public educational services in one of the archipelago’s most rapidly growing areas.

The visit provided an opportunity to monitor several priority projects for Yaiza on site and to confirm the need for a coordinated response among government agencies to support the municipality’s growth with more and better public services. In this context, Fernando Clavijo emphasised that government action must be based on “planning, institutional cooperation, and a commitment to the real needs of each territory”.

Yaiza Ayuntamiento has started work this week on replacing a total of 392 streetlights in the Castillo del Águila area of Playa Blanca.

The project represents an investment of 144,000 euros, drawn from European funds.

The installation of new LED streetlights joins other projects already completed or planned across the municipality. Mayor Óscar Noda said: “We are replacing all the streetlights in this area, taking another step forward in energy efficiency for public lighting in Playa Blanca.”

Mayor Noda also confirmed: “New, fully self-sufficient solar streetlights have already been ordered to illuminate the bike path connecting the entrance to Playa Blanca and the industrial zone. The supplier will deliver them in June so they can be installed.”

In addition, the comprehensive renovation project for Avenida Papagayo in Playa Blanca, the first phase of which is already under way, will also include the installation of new energy-efficient lighting.

Contracts for works to complete the Playa Blanca sports pavilion will be tendered over the summer, Yaiza Mayor Óscar Noda stated yesterday.

The announcement followed the completion of a report on works left to be done by the previous contractor, Levantina Ingeniería y Construcción S.L., which went bust in the summer of 2024. 

The report estimated that the construction of the pavilion is 95% complete, but that additional works on decoration and equipment leave a further 20% to be done. The cost of the pavilion, which so far has reached €8 million, is estimated to reach €11 million.

A man who fell from the second floor of a hotel in Playa Blanca was rushed to hospital last night.

According to sources, the man fell into a shallow pool containing around 40 cms of water in the H10 Rubicón Palace Hotel. Paramedics placed a cervical collar on the victim, and firefighters positioned him on a rescue board. He was then taken to the ambulance.

As well as Canarian Health Service employees and firefighters, local police and Guardia Civil officers also attended the incident. No further details about his condition have been released.

Yaiza Ayuntamiento has formally submitted its Playa Blanca cruise tourism proposal to Puertos Canarios, placing a strong emphasis on authentic, small-scale experiences for high‑spending visitors.

Óscar Noda, mayor of Yaiza and a member of Puerto Canarios’ Advisory Board, handed over a comprehensive 45‑page dossier to the management on Wednesday. The document contains detailed information on tourist attractions, natural, cultural, historical and recreational resources, as well as public services. It is aimed at cruise passengers “who seek more intimate, personalised experiences with a focus on the quality and authenticity of the destination.”

In addition to the report, the mayor is relying “on the confirmation of the contracting of all port services – towing, mooring and pilotage – to welcome the first cruise ship next November without incident, just as the managing director of Puertos Canarios, José Gilberto Moreno, told us during his visit to Playa Blanca on March 31,” Noda stated.

Regarding the tourism offering, Óscar Noda explained: “One of the most important aspects to consider is awareness of the impact of tourism on the destination. In the case of boutique cruise tourism, cruise passengers are concerned about the environment and the social impact of tourism, seeking traditional, sustainable and responsible options.”

Yaiza has developed a tourist profile tailored to this market: a visitor who enjoys learning about the destination’s popular culture, history and nature; who prefers immersive experiences and seeks tranquillity to fully enjoy serene surroundings. The goal is to offer relaxed and highly personalised experiences, such as a visit to a cheese factory, winery or craft workshop.

The centre of Playa Blanca is already feeling the benefits of the first phase of the Avenida Papagayo renovation, with 100 new parking spaces now available for residents and visitors.

The project marks a major step forward in the renewal of one of Playa Blanca’s key roads.

The initial phase covers the stretch between the town Church and the Papagayo shopping centre. As part of the works, 35 spaces have been created on the public lot behind the church, alongside 65 additional parallel parking spaces on Avenida Papagayo itself. To accommodate the new layout, the avenida has become a one‑way street towards Las Coloradas between the church and Calle Maciot.

The car park behind the church includes two blue badge spaces for people with reduced mobility (PRM), as well as a dedicated area for motorcycles and another for loading and unloading.

Looking ahead, Mayor Óscar Noda confirmed further improvements are on the way. “We will also build 300 new free public parking spaces in the unused area in front of the Princesa Yaiza Hotel,” he explained.

The mayor added: “The overall urban renewal project extends along the entire length of the Avenida Papagayo to the Ciudad Jardín roundabout, with a total investment of 2.6 million euros.”

Ángel Lago, Yaiza’s Councilor for Public Works, highlighted the comprehensive nature of the scheme. “This is an ambitious project designed not only to improve the road surface, pave, and mark the roadway, but also to build sidewalks, remove architectural barriers to ensure accessibility, and install streetlights – all measures aimed at improving safety for drivers and pedestrians on one of Playa Blanca’s main roads.”

In addition to the Avenida Papagayo works, Yaiza Ayuntamiento will soon begin another major project for the town: a full renovation of the entrance to Playa Blanca via Femés, on the stretch between the Plabacón roundabouts and the Marcastell residential development. That scheme carries a budget of 1.3 million euros.

Yesterday, Yaiza Ayuntamiento announced the temporary closure of Dorada beach in Playa Blanca after health authorities detected bacterial contamination caused by intestinal enterococci.

The beach is likely to remain closed today and until further notice, when further samples will be taken and analysed, while the council attempts to find the source of the contamination.

Yaiza has urged holidaymakers and residents to use the other beaches in and around the resort, such as Playa Flamingo, the Town Beach or the string of beaches at Papagayo

This is the latest in series of bathing bans caused by contamination on the island. Playa Reducto in Arrecife recently re-opened after three months of closure.

Work has been carried out this week to replace damaged streetlights in the San Marcial del Rubicón area of Playa Blanca.

The initiative forms part of a wider strategy covering several parts of the tourist town, according to the Mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda.

“The work plan calls for the replacement of 390 streetlights in the Castillo del Águila partial plan next week,” said the mayor.

Yaiza Ayuntamiento’s energy efficiency programme has already resulted in a reduction of more than 50% in the electricity bill. In addition to street lighting and municipal offices, Yaiza is implementing other energy efficiency initiatives in outdoor public spaces, such as the La Degollada picnic area.

In this regard, Mayor Noda maintained that “the government’s efforts are not only aimed at maintaining and replacing damaged equipment, but also at continuing to expand photovoltaic installations.”
