The Lanzarote Water Consortium has put the restoration of Unit 3 at the Lanzarote III plant out to tender, with the project expected to take 14 months and cost €6.48 million.

Lanzarote is set to increase its desalinated water production capacity by 10,000 cubic metres per day following the planned restoration and commissioning of Unit 3 at the Lanzarote III plant.

The Lanzarote Water Consortium has put the project out to bid with a base budget of 6,482,785.09 euros and a completion period of 14 months.

The call for bids was published last Friday. It covers the comprehensive restoration and rehabilitation of the unit, including the supply, assembly, adaptation, installation and commissioning work required.

The aim is to restore infrastructure capable of producing an additional 10,000 cubic metres of desalinated water per day, increasing the capacity of the water supply system serving Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

Lanzarote Water Consortium president Oswaldo Betancort said the investment “demonstrates that we are strictly adhering to the commitments arising from the declaration of the water emergency.”

“We committed to increasing water production, reducing losses by upgrading pipes and networks, and promoting water conservation, and we are making decisive progress toward each of these goals.”

Betancort added: “adding 10,000 cubic meters per day to our production capacity represents a major leap forward in ensuring greater security and stability in the water supply. We are restoring infrastructure that for years was not up to standard and advancing investments to meet the growing demand and needs of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.”

The project follows the declaration of the water emergency and the need to increase production in response to rising water demand, population and tourism growth, as well as the deterioration and obsolescence of some older units.

La Graciosa suffered a power cut for several hours yesterday, causing serious problems for homes, bars and restaurants on the island.

After the outage was reported at around 7 am, technicians made their way to one of the pylons at the foot of the Famara cliffs, where the problem had originated. After several hours work, the electricity was reconnected at around 3.30 pm.

During the day, a small electrical generator was able to provide some power to the oldest houses in Caleta de Sebo, but was not sufficient to supply the whole town.

Firemen were called after two women and two children found themselves locked inside the depot of a car hire firm early on Monday morning.

The group had entered the depot just after midnight to pick up a car they had hired, but when they tried to leave they discovered that the exit had been closed.
