The bodies of at least six immigrants have been discovered at Caleta de Caballo, near La Santa, after their patera (fishing boat) ran aground in the rocky seas at 1 am this morning.

Emergency services have located four survivors who informed them that there were 12 people on the boat. At the time of writing, six dead bodies have been located and the fate of the remaining two is unknown.

This is just the latest tragedy to take place in the water close to Lanzarote’s shore. In January 2018, seven immigrants died when a patera ran aground near Playa Bastian in Costa Teguise, and on 15th February 2009, 25 immigrants drowned when their boat tipped over off the coast of Los Cocoteros.
