In a special ceremony held on Thursday this week, San Bartolomé Ayuntamiento paid tribute to Bodegas El Grifo by officially renaming a municipal square in honour of the company’s 250th anniversary.
The event, which took place at the entrance to La Florida, was attended by numerous public representatives, local residents, and employees of the celebrated winery.
During the ceremony, a commemorative plaque was unveiled, formally renaming the space.
The Mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez, and the owner of Bodegas El Grifo, Fermín Otamendi, were both present to mark the occasion.
Mayor Isidro Pérez highlighted the fundamental role El Grifo has played in shaping the identity and economy of the municipality. “Since its inception, this winery has been the economic engine of San Bartolomé, promoting the primary sector with respect for the land and its people,” he said. “El Grifo exemplifies the courage of the men and women of Lanzarote who have known how to transform difficulty into opportunity, and the volcanic landscape into culture, identity, and economy. Bodegas El Grifo is one of the historical emblems of the municipality of San Bartolomé.”
Throughout its history, Bodegas El Grifo has promoted the name of San Bartolomé and Lanzarote across the globe, garnering prestigious international awards such as Mundus Vini, Bacchus, Decanter, and Berliner Wine Trophy. Notably, this year it received the 2025 Canary Islands Award for Excellence in Tourism in La Palma.
For his part, the owner of Bodegas El Grifo, Fermín Otamendi, expressed his gratitude for the institutional gesture and the affection of the citizens. He emphasised that this tribute is a collective recognition of the work of entire generations who have made it possible for El Grifo to remain an international benchmark for volcanic wine today.
