The Rebel Trekkers are a group of women hikers from Costa Teguise who recently undertook an unforgettable hike from one tip of Lanzarote to the other. Wendy Allan takes up the story.
The Rebel Trekkers are all ladies in our 50s with a combined total of 60 years living on this island, and we share a joint interest in walking and trekking in Lanzarote. Our motto is “Nothing less than 10 kilometres” and all our walks reflect that philosophy.
After doing lots of treks around Lanzarote we decided that we wanted to challenge ourselves and walk the length of the island using the Camino Natural de Lanzarote (GR131) in three stages. Usually we are all occupied with working various jobs and shifts, along with living busy lifestyles so this challenge would have been difficult to organise for the group. But after discussion, five of us: Mandy, Jo-Anne, Karen, Sheelagh and myself committed to doing this.
We commenced in Orzola on Tuesday 26th January, following the trail through Haría to Teguise town, clocking an impressive 25.5km in just under five hours.

In total, we walked 73.97 kms and climbed a total elevation of 1,567metres. All this over three days with a total walking time of 14 hours and 7mins. At all times we observed social distancing and mask use as per the law in Lanzarote.
We found ourselves constantly in total wonder of the beauty of the island, with the recent greenery and the flowers, and we were amazed by places we passed through on our journey that we had never been to, and sights and scenery that we had never seen before.
As well as testing our knees, hips, ankles and other joints, we formed a sense of camaraderie with our great chats, putting the world to rights and encouraging each other all the way.
This has been a tremendous achievement for us and we are so proud of ourselves for completing this challenge. There is no doubt the Rebel Trekkers will be back out on the road in style on another big trek very shortly!
