Your home is a place that not only reflects your personality. It can also be a record of your history and an experience that brings emotion, memory and sensation into play.

Everyone knows what a cat is, but if you think more deeply you’ll realise that your idea of a cat is probably based on cats you’ve seen and known in your lifetime, and is slightly different to everyone else’s. Children who grew up with a cat will share similar memories of the ginger tom or tabby that lit up their childhoods. The same thing applies to colours, furniture, rooms, fabrics and all sorts of elements that are involved in your living space In language this is known as connotation – the cultural and individual meanings that we give to words, but as everyone knows, it applies to all sorts of other things, too. These are the associations and enthusiasms that make you the quirky, bonkers individual person you are.

You and the people you share your life with all have individual and shared connotations relating to homes, and one of the most rewarding things you can do is track down those fond memories or positive associations and start to surround yourself with them.

That doesn’t mean you have to fill your home with junk, but it’s a great reason to go shopping together, to take an active interest in the things you bring home and make sure that the things you live with “spark joy”.

On Lanzarote there are a number of places that stock items that are a little “off the beaten path”, unique pieces which will make your home your very own. So go ahead and celebrate your eccentricity by surrounding yourself with sensual and emotional triggers.
