If you’ve been thinking of a trip over the water to Fuerteventura, this week offers one of the most wonderful spectacles that the island has to offer.

The International Kite Festival started yesterday and will fill the skies over the dunes of Corralejo with hundreds of astonishing creations until Sunday.

We’ve visited the festival a few times, and it’s a genuinely beautiful experience. A few years ago, Angelina Jolie copied us and took her children to see the kites while filming on the island.

The main exhibitions take place on the Grandes Playas de Corralejo, which is about five kilometres from the harbour. This Saturday and Sunday a free shuttle bus service to the dunes will be operating at 20-minute intervals from Corralejo’s Estacion de Guaguas (bus station), also stopping at the Lobos Bahía Club and the EL Campanario shopping Centre.

To get to Corralejo from Lanzarote, just hop on one of the ferries – Fred Olsen and Naviera Armas run car ferries and Lineas Maritima’s smaller ferry allows foot passengers to hop on and off. Tickets can be bought at Playa Blanca and are rarely sold out in advance. We’d also advise you to keep on eye on the weather forecast for La Oliva at www.aemet.es/en/ if you’re planning the trip. Current forecasts indicate that the rain expected at the end of the week will have passed by the weekend, but also predict very little wind.
