Work will begin in the coming weeks on a major €2.26 million improvement project for the streets surrounding Playa Chica in Puerto del Carmen. The project aims to enhance the area’s attractiveness and pedestrian safety.

Canarias7 reports that the project has a ten-month deadline for the basic works and anticipates that it will be completed before the summer of 2027. The project will see the installation of new street furniture, including benches and litter bins.

The streets in question were built over half a century ago, when Puerto del Carmen was a fledgling tourist town with the Fariones hotel just opening in the 1960s. The council states the existing layouts and infrastructure were designed for “very different” requirements, commercial resources, and population density than those of today.

The technical plan outlines significant changes for calle Roque del Oeste, calle Montaña Clara, calle La Graciosa, and calle Harimaguada. As reported by Canarias7, works here will involve modifying pavements to create a single, continuous platform that prioritises pedestrians. This redesign will result in a reduction of on-street parking spaces.

The new urban layout will be supported by upgrades to energy efficiency and public lighting. These improvements will extend beyond the aforementioned streets to include several adjacent roads: calle Roque del Este, calle Acatife, calle Timanfaya, calle Cenobio, and calle Alegranza.
