A young man died yesterday after being swept into the sea by a large wave at Los Charcones, near Playa Blanca.

The 27-year-old Italian resident on Lanzarote had been fishing off the rocks with a friend when a large wave swept both of them into the sea.  He was later located by a rescue helicopter with no pulse.

Emergency services initially managed to resuscitate him but died a few hours later in hospital.

The other man, aged 30, managed to get out of the water by himself and was treated for hypothermia when emergency services arrived.

The Canarian Government’s pre-alert for dangerous coastal conditions remains in place. It’s highly recommended not to bathe, fish, walk on piers or approach open rocky coastlines on Lanzarote’s north-west coast.
