John Leppard tells us “When I was much younger I used to smile at my parents’ daily “pill-popping’ ritual. Now I am old, I realise that it was no joke.” As usual, John has expressed his views on the subject in verse.

Keep Taking the Tablets


I have more pills than the pharmacy,
I have tablets by the ton,
It may seem like an over-kill,
But there’s a reason for each one.
One is for my blood pressure,
It keeps it on the line,
Another’s for my kidneys,
Now they’re working pretty fine.
I have one for old men’s problems,
Shrouded in mystery,
One to keep me regular,
One to make me pee.
There’s one to stop a tremble,
So my hands don’t shake,
I also take another one,
For my tummy’s safety sake.
I have one for arthritis,
One to slow me down,
Another for a wonky knee
That tends to let me down.
I could go on for ever,
But by now you’ve got my gist,
Yet each time I see a doctor
More get added to my list.
I’ve got tablets of all shapes and size,
All colours and descriptions,
And I reorder every month
With multi-page prescriptions.
I don’t want to sound ungrateful,
For its on my side they’re battling,
But I think I need an extra pill,
One to stop me rattling
