While Madrid’s new city government attempts to reopen the city’s famous “Madrid Central” zone to traffic, Barcelona has taken its anti-contamination measures way further, establishing a 95 square city centre zone where high emissions vehicles will be banned.
The Low Emissions Zone will cover almost the whole city of Barcelona, including several suburbs and satellite towns. Older cars classed as “high emissions” will be banned entirely from 7am to 8pm on weekdays. The ban will initially only apply to cars and motorcycles, but buses, lorries and vans will be included after a year.
