Since its introduction to the British public, as early as the 18th century, Indian food has become a well-established favourite amongst Brits and ranks in the top 5 most popular cuisines in the UK.
The UK prides itself on hearty, warming dishes, from a plethora of pies and stews to roasted meats and heaps of vegetables.
Indian cuisine was sure to become a favourite one way or another. The rich creamy sauces of curry dishes to the crispy, spice-filled fried dishes settled perfectly into the average diet in the UK and the cooler climate.
A 2016 report by the Financial Times revealed that there are around 12,000 Indian restaurants in the UK. In London alone there are more restaurants in the city than Mumbai and Delhi combined.
While Indian restaurants are busiest during the evening, they can often be overlooked for lunches as the cuisine is seen to be too heavy or too filling.
