June 2026 | Gazette Life | 3ContentsEd's letterAbout seven years ago I went to Lanzarote%u2019s Chamber of Commerce to attend a meeting about the effects of Brexit on Lanzarote and the Canaries. It was a busy meeting, attended by men and women from several local businesses, and addressed by speakers from the Canarian and Spanish Government and an EU representative. As the only British person present, plenty of people wanted to chat with me and ask my opinions. There was certainly regret at the result of the referendum, and interest in why Britain had felt it so important to leave the EU, but there was absolutely no resentment or anger. British residents, businesses and tourists were regarded fondly, and the main concern seemed to be how to maintain a close and warm relationship after Brexit, and how to prepare for any possible difficulties it might cause.Back then none of us knew what was round the corner, but Brexit turned out to be the least of Lanzarote%u2019s problems after a pandemic that would almost wipe out tourism for over a year, a European war and increased inflation and fuel prices. Despite all this, tourism, led by the British market, bounced back with a vengeance, breaking records year after year.Published ByCANARY ISLAND IMPACT SERVICES S.L.Apartado de Correos (PO Box) 27 35510, Puerto del Carmen, T%u00edas.LanzaroteCif: B76362367DEPOSITO LEGAL: GC 786-2015EMAIL CONTACTSEDITORIAL: editorial@gazettelife.comADVERTISING: advertising@gazettelife.comCLASSIFIEDS: classified@gazettelife.comSOCIAL MEDIA: digital@gazettelife.com+34 928 093 823 +34 621 274 473www.gazettelife.comWhilst we make every effort to ensure that material published in the magazine is decent, legal and accurate, it can take no responsibility for any damage or loss which might arise as a result of material published herein. We%u2019re concerned with Lanzarote and the communities of people who live here, as well as those who visit and love the island. Back in 2016 we didn%u2019t tell anyone who had the right to vote in the referendum which way to vote because that%u2019s not our job, nor would it have made a blind bit of difference. What we did do was look at the possible drawbacks and benefits of Brexit for Lanzarote. The good news is that there have been relatively few drawbacks for the island, and the relationship between the island and the UK remains close and warm; the bad news is that those drawbacks have been mostly experienced by British residents, businesses and visitors. As for benefits: we%u2019re still looking. Answers on a postcard, please.
