Alain Berset of Switzerland is Europe’s best-paid leader, according to figures from the OECD. The Swiss President is paid €391,000 a year, almost eight times the average wage in his country, and fifty grand more than Donald Trump earns.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel is runner-up, with €300,000 a year, and is followed by the Belgian and Austrian leaders. The UK’s Theresa May comes well down the list, on €172,000, but still earns more than twice as much as Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, whose €79,000 annual salary is just over twice the average wage in Spain.
Meanwhile Queen Elizabeth II is easily the best paid monarch. Her annual grant of €87 million dwarves all other European monarchs. Spain’s Felipe II, for example, is granted €239,000 p.a.
